Locally grown flowers mean you're helping keep the butterflies and bees fed and encouraging wildlife in your area. I grow a variety of different flowers and foliage without chemical nasties to encourage a diverse range of insects.
We all know how important pollinators are, so this way you can be happy knowing you're helping them out.
Ever thought about how far your flowers have travelled before they get to your vase? A lot of supermarket and even florist shop flowers will have come from Holland, Kenya and perhaps even further afield! That's a lot of airmiles. Buying locally grown flowers helps reduce carbon and also puts a smile on my face!
Buying locally grown seasonal flowers means what is available changes with the seasons (and variable weather!). Some garden flowers, such as lilacs, don't last as long in the vase as commercial flowers and so you're less likely to see them in the shops. Scented flowers definitely make it worth the fleeting beauty.
I pick my flowers direct from the garden so it means there is no need for plastic wraps to transport them in
When my flowers are conditioned, it's in reusable buckets and I present them for sale either loose in glass recyclable jars (I'm very happy to receive them back for reuse), tied bunches or wrapped in brown paper and tissue with twine. This can go on your compost heap as well as the flowers once they are done or the paper can go in recycling.
All little improvements towards the reduction of single use plastic.
